My not-at-all-as-thorough-as-it-could-be breakdown of the three main women in “The Avengers.” Feedback more than welcome, as I know I missed some stuff and over-simplified things in the interest of fitting it into my word count. It doesn’t pass the Bechdel Test, but Black Widow, Pepper Potts, and even Maria Hill are wonderful as far as this geek girl is concerned. Contains a few mild spoilers.
But perhaps the most anti-stereotypical thing about Maria Hill is that she even exists in “The Avengers.” While some directors would say “Ok, we have Black Widow. We have our requisite girl Avenger,” and call it a day, Whedon recognized the need for Black Widow to not be unique as the only butt-kicking woman in the entire SHIELD organization. And so we have Maria Hill, a woman who is an action hero in her own right, who gives orders, who cares about the mission, and who is not at all superfluous despite being one more woman than most action movies deem entirely necessary.
